"Part love story, part history lesson and part a tale of survival, it highlights the toll the German occupation of Austria, Italy and Sicily took on the people. "
Anton Fischer had British and Austrian nationality. Working at the Belvedere Museum in Vienna, he becomes involved in art fraud to save the museum's works from the Nazis. His regular café, Café 7Rheinhardt, is where he meets Milo, a Washington Post journalist, who is involved with the hiding of many of the original works. Ingrid, is the wife of the café owner who has a soft spot for Anton. Part love story, part history lesson and part a tale of survival, it highlights the toll the German occupation of Austria, Italy and Sicily took on the people. Not only the fear but the shortages and survival each person endured. It's also a tribute to the Monuments Men who followed the army searching for works of art, and the part the Mafia played. I enjoyed it all. There is enough of a thrill in certain parts of the story to hope there are more books by this author.
