Red Souls by Susan F Banks centres around Willet Du Place, born with a unique and debilitating hearing sensitivity that allows her to hear the smallest sounds and things from far away, but that leaves her with torturous headaches and migraines. In an attempt to live more comfortably, Willet and her sister Audrey have their house soundproofed, thus crossing paths with Dean and his friend T.J. This newly formed group find themselves discovering the world isn’t quite as it previously seemed, when Gem, a 170 year-old Guardian of the Astral Gate needs Willet’s help to keep the Red Souls, smoke-like spectres controlled by Jat the Deceiver and Lord of the Underworld, at bay.

This is an urban, supernatural tale that sees the characters form bonds, and all discover their part in Gem’s fight to keep the seal of their world intact and the Lord of the Underworld at bay. The use of the spiritual, meditation as a path to higher forms of consciousness provides the link between the mundane world and the supernatural.

Think the Scooby Doo gang with the powers of Doctor Strange. I liked T.J’s scepticism and slower decision to believe what’s happening, he feels like a relatable connection for the reader as the world quickly shifts into one filled with supernatural, and the more willing acceptance of this from some of the other characters.

The relationships between Dean and Audrey, and T.J and Willet build quickly but face their own bumps and pitstops, cementing them as a team for any potential future books.

I think that Red Souls is a quick and entertaining read that would appeal to fans of friendship and relationship stories with superhero vibes and a supernatural twist.
