Fans of Harriet Evans will probably agree that this big family drama is possibly her best book so far. It is terrific. Like so many of this type of involved family tale it centres around a gathering, in this case mother Martha’s eightieth birthday, so the three siblings, their appendages and offspring are summoned. Secrets are about to be revealed … and so the drama begins. As Martha begins her story so even bigger dramas land at their feet. This is not the sort of tale I want to give anything away – you just have to read it and let the various secrets surprise you and keep you turning the pages. Highly recommended.
