"A magical bookshop hides in the shadows yet sits forefront and centre in this darkly beguiling and romantic tale of thievery, lies, power, and heartbreak. "
This bewitching and fiery LoveReading Star Book explores magic, power, love and loss, in the most fantastical and compelling way. Chiron’s Bookshop must have an owner, and so it passes to Cassandra when Chiron is murdered, with his plea that if you look after it, it will look after you. Author Georgia Summers has the ability to twist darkness into magic, and her debut The City of Stardust was another Star Book.
I absolutely love her way with words, and even more so, the power of the worlds she creates. She is not afraid to step into pain and loss which adds a decided edge to the magic. The bookshop itself is the most enchanting of treasures, though a frisson of danger dwells within and I was aware of it every step of the way.
An entity in its own right, capable of making decisions and following its own path, it creates the most fascinating sense of place. The characters have emotional depth, which meant they felt entirely real to me as I got to know them and I found Cassandra to be intriguing, there are layers to her personality which at times left me feeling unsettled.
The plot challenges you to keep up, it is fast paced and full of devious twists and turns. I fell so deeply into this tale I had no choice other than to include it as a Liz Pick of the Month. The Bookshop Below feels both modern and ancient, drawn of fairytale and reality, and so holds a wonderfully engaging and richly enticing power.
