Picking up where The Satsuma Complex left off, The Hotel Avocado sees Emily relocating to Brighton to take over a dilapidated hotel inherited from her estranged father. Meanwhile, Gary, still in Peckham and awaiting his court appearance as a key witness to the previous book’s events, is faced with a choice: embrace a new life with Emily by the sea or stick with his old routine, including his steady job and the familiar presence of next-door neighbour Grace.
As ever, Bob Mortimer laces the story with surreal touches, Gary’s philosophical squirrel friend returns, inviting him to have a think around the reasons behind his apparent self-sabotage. But the stakes are higher this time: someone doesn’t want Gary to testify, and he’s forced to take creative precautions to ensure he lives long enough to choose which path to follow.
The novel introduces a host of new, gloriously outrageous characters, including Gary’s mate Andy, who’s preoccupied with whether he’ll ever get to enjoy the bunker he’s obsessively built for the zombie apocalypse. These strange and wonderful personalities add even more flavour to a world already rich in offbeat charm.
Ridiculous and heartwarming in equal measure, The Hotel Avocado is another triumph of comic storytelling. Mortimer once again proves himself a master of the absurd, crafting a tale that is laugh-out-loud funny, strangely touching, and unmistakably his own.
