This is a compelling tale of a life dedicated to Tennis and a quietly powerful reflection on the sacrifices needed for success and the considerations for what will come after. Greatness feels almost like a coming of age story, although it would probably be better to call it something like a transitional narrative. We meet King returning to compete in the US Open one last time at the end of his career, trying to figure out who he is and what he wants as the final time he leaves the court approaches. As his personal, emotional and physical battles unfold a portrait of a lonely figure is created. King is followed everywhere by a team, known by the world’s media and tennis fans but underneath it all he’s cast adrift, unsure of the actual bonds he has with those closest to him outside of professional requirements. The passion for tennis shines through every description of training, every volley and locker room brought to life. An unflinching focus, dedication and determination runs through the heart of Greatness and is reflected in the frank style of writing. I was holding my breath and cheering for every hard earned point described in the climactic match as though I was in the crowds. As we meet King at the end of his career, he appears to us an underdog to get behind, his past victories offering us more hope of success as we read. King himself is a restless, complex character. I wouldn’t describe him as likeable with the abruptness he shows his opponents. However, because we’re inside his head, we have an understanding of the storm brewing within him and how it spills over into those interactions. I find this is a brilliant perspective as it softens those harsher moments somewhat as I formed my opinion. Greatness is a subtly powerful story, its steady pacing quietly compels you to keep reading, to find out whether King will go all the way in this tournament, and how he will feel when “game, set and match” is called on his career. A glossary of terms is helpfully included at the start of the book, though wouldn’t be necessary for anyone with a passing knowledge of the sport in order to immerse themselves in this contemplative story.
