An atmospheric historical fantasy set in Victorian England where an ancient spirit coaxes out darkest desires and Jack the Ripper roams the streets.

The Whispering Shroud is an atmospheric historical fantasy that begins Scotland's Immortal Sisterhood Saga. The murky, dark streets of Victorian London set the sinister scene for a dark fantasy that introduces us to Koribella and her Cù-Sìth Scrabster. Something is clawing for access to the world, and Kori and Scrabster are on the trail. Blending folklore and the supernatural with historical figures of Oscar Wilde, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the spectral presence of Jack the Ripper to create a tense read for fans of darker fantasy.

The timing of the book and the inclusion of historical figures and events was cleverly done. They felt like a natural part of the story and didn’t pull focus from the original elements of the plotline. The inclusion of Scottish Gaelic and folklore added an authenticity to the supernatural elements and grounded them within the story. I liked Kori and Scrabster’s dynamic, and their connection serves as a beacon of light throughout the book. The construct that the spirit entices what’s already there to the surface adds a psychological suspense element to the plotline that further develops the sense of unease. The Whispering Shroud has a steadier pace, with grand, well-executed descriptions being favored over fast paced action, though there are still spikes in the tempo and perilous moments to thrill readers. The writing style adds to the pace and the atmosphere, taking its time to linger on the details with use of striking metaphorical language - “The view is decent if you like your air chewable.” Like the London fog, The Whispering Shroud creeps in from the edges until, steadily immersing the reader in a thrilling and dark read.
