I'm M.J. McMuncle, a Scottish author living in Orkney, where the sea, sky, and ancient stories are never far away. I studied Creative Writing at university, and my work is deeply inspired by the folklore and mythology of Scotland and the wider North Atlantic world.
The Scotland's Immortal Sisterhood series draws upon Scottish, Irish, and Norse mythology, reimagining legendary creatures and immortal beings within a shared world. At its heart is the bloodline of Arranah, a Baobhan Sith—the Highland vampire of Scottish legend—and one of Scotland's oldest immortals. The series follows her descendants across vast stretches of history, from ancient Alba hundreds of thousands of years ago to Victorian London, where her daughter Koribella hunts the Ripper in 1888.
The creatures and immortals that inhabit my books are rooted in authentic folklore. Rather than borrowing from modern fantasy traditions, I draw directly from the myths, legends, and oral traditions that have shaped Scotland for centuries.
As a writer, I favour an immersive style that invites readers to step directly into the story. Rather than explaining every detail, I prefer to let the world, characters, and events reveal themselves naturally. I trust readers to discover, interpret, and draw their own conclusions as the journey unfolds.
