The Chronicles of the Black Company spins away from military fantasy into a more character driven novel, it’s amusing almost playful at times, and ends on one hell of a cliffhanger so you can expect more to come! Existing fans will no doubt be celebrating, the first novel was published over 40 years ago and there has been a considerable gap since author Glen Cook has visited this particular series. If you are new then I really do recommend starting with The Black Company and working your way forward, much of this novel will potentially pass you by otherwise. If this series is already a firm favourite then you may well miss the lack of battle scenes, there is action though, which steadily increases through the novel. Two cousins narrate using the annals as a diary to score points against each other, meanwhile fan favourites can be found lurking and plotting. Along with the bickering Arkana and Shukrat a little history lesson also arrives and a quest begins. I loved the shadows, Uncle, and getting to know the two cousins, I feel this is a really interesting new direction and the book serves as setting the scene for what is to come. One for serious fans of the Black Company, Lies Weeping is stimulating introduction to a new arc in a much loved and popular fantasy series.
