Having access to magic means that you’re always capable of perfection. At least, that’s how Annie Wildwood lives her life. The magic of the Celestial Bakehouse sparkled off the pages, I yearned for my own visit to Annie's cosy cafe and Lucy Jane Woods' descriptions of sweet treats and delicious bakes were their own special kind of witchcraft. But even with magic, living your life at a million miles an hour on a quest to please others won’t end well. When Annie agrees to mentor Maeve, a bright but sarcastic teen with no one else to guide her, Annie finds she also has some lessons to learn.
This is a sugary sweet tale of found family and finding your place. I (lovingly) wanted to grab Annie by her perfectly pressed pink shoulders and shake her at the beginning as she burned herself out, so I was relieved when Maeve and then gruff mountain man Hal came into her life and turned it upside down in the best way possible. I enjoyed the ease and comfort of the romance storyline, a stark contrast from the second guessing and anxiety spiralling of Annie’s previous life. But I think the little found family that’s established was the magical star of this show. Pair with an autumn day, cosy blankets, warm drink and sugary confection of choice (Bonus points if it’s pink).
