One narrative told through a collection of writings. The format of Words & Graphics - Blue Sunshine by C.O.B. is really interesting. Making use of prose and poetry to tell a story is a unique way of exploring different ways of storytelling within one piece. Implied by the title, alongside the different text forms there’s also a collection of images in varying styles to either complement the text or tell their own part of the story. The focus of the storyline is one man’s relationships, both romantically and with his family. I was able to follow this story throughout but I found that the changes in style did impact the fluidity of the story for me. The change from descriptive prose to more emotive poetry and back again is something that I would say requires the reader’s full attention; the switch can be quite confusing if you’re not fully immersed in reading. The images, a mixture of photographs, doodles, digital sketches and even cartoon strips are all thematically relevant. I think some of the digital art could perhaps be improved to deliver a more polished final book. I think that Words & Graphics - Blue Sunshine is an interesting experiment in form and storytelling, the second of such works by this author. It’s a quick read with a fairly universal storyline for those looking for something a little bit different to read next.
