It’s fair to say that I’m not remotely interested in the Church of England and was nervous that might be a barrier to enjoying this book, as one of the key strands is the opposition to women in the clergy. So I was delighted to find that it isn’t – if anything, it adds an intellectual notch to the story. Evil Intent is a gripping book which I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who relishes a great read and a great crime story in particular. I would also defy you to guess the ending – it is rare that I don’t work out whodunit but I didn’t in this case!
Life in the clergy is quiet, respectful, peaceful – or so Callie Anson believed when she began her new job as curate to Reverend Brian Stanford at All Saints’ church in Paddington. Little did she realise just how wrong she could be.

But when he is found strangled to death and her mentor Frances is accused of the crime, Callie must call upon all her faith to steer her through such troubling and violent times. With DI Stuart Neville and DS Mark Lombardi leading the investigation, it is not long before the ugly truth behind the ecclesiastical façade is chipped away to reveal the hidden secrets of the clergy.
‘It takes someone with the skill of Kate Charles to remind us that murder among the middle classes can be just as chilling and credible as death on the mean streets…the dark secrets of people passionately committed to keeping up appearances produces and intelligent and convincing story. One to hide from the vicar.’ - Val McDermid
