Wonderfully captivating and so very readable, this is historical fiction at its best. ‘Bloodline’ is the third in ‘The War of the Roses’ series, Henry VI is prisoner, his Queen is on the warpath, and the sons of the dead are set on revenge. Conn Iggulden excels in taking history by the scruff of the neck and making it feel intensely personal. Characters walked in front of my eyes, decisions they made were understandable, their feelings were relatable, yet a seething mass of revenge, jealousy and pride storms the pages. The family trees of the Houses of Lancaster, York, and their supporters were for me, an essential and fascinating read. In places the calculating, behind the scenes decisions twisted and took root, while in others the true and mighty horror of war stampeded through my imagination. ‘Bloodline’ took me prisoner from beginning to end, and I relished every second.
