LoveReading Expert Review of Bent

Vibrant, educational and thought provoking, this is a brilliant book for expanding your horizons and perhaps reframing how you look at the world.

Part memoir, part dismantling of the perceived fixed ideas on identity and sexuality, ‘Bent’ is based on the author's own experiences of sexuality and manhood. I really enjoyed the author’s honest and witty writing style, and found it very easy to become immersed in tales.

Using lived experience to explore issues around labels and preconceptions. I think that this book brilliantly gets across the message that the connection to another person is the important part of any relationship. I also loved that he takes the opportunity to discuss consent and how to work through this topic with a teenager.

I read this book in one sitting. Vibrant, educational and thought provoking, this is a brilliant book for expanding your horizons and perhaps reframing how you look at the world. I would heartily recommend this book to nonfiction and fiction fans alike, if you are looking for a deeply personal narrative with moments to pause and reflect.

Bent Synopsis

Part memoir, part polemic on sexuality, Bent takes you on one man’s journey from straight growing up to beyond the labels by the time he’s settled down to raise a family. As a former firefighter, escort, and all-around knockabout, Adams has tales to share, and he delivers them with candor, humor, and an instinctive curiosity toward the issues they raise:

  • Who is really straight and what does that even mean?
  • What effect can sleeping with a gender-fluid individual have on your orientation?
  • How many seconds, exactly, does it take for a stare between two men to become a gay one?
  • How can a so-called bisexual ever be bisexual in real time?

Through the passionate interrogation of these questions and more, Bent furthers the conversation around sex and gender, and consistently illuminates the shifting nature of identity. All author proceeds to benefit The Trevor Project.

Bent Reader Reviews

In addition to our Lovereading expert opinion some of our Reader Review Panel were also lucky enough to read and review this title.

I enjoyed Adam’s straight forward and unapologetic approach when it came to his examination of his own sexuality, something which many may frown upon these days, but I found quite refreshing.

Bent: Sexuality, Manhood & Other Stories is a very well-written and engaging commentary on masculinity, sexuality and gender.  I enjoyed Adam’s straight forward and unapologetic approach when it came to his examination of his own sexuality, something which many may frown upon these days, but I found quite refreshing.  I think it is well worth a read for anyone interested in these topics and I would thoroughly recommend it.
