A splendidly-engineered thriller and stand alone novel by the crime writing daughter of the great James Lee Burke. Set in New York, a powerful lawyer is called in by his teenage daughter to defend a man she once loved, but ruthlessly abandoned when she was younger, of a murder charge. However, it soon appears that all the known facts and others she digs up indubitably point to him as the killer and the doubts grow in her mind, although she feels a moral obligation to get him off the hook. Balancing the legal and personal world, the plot develops with smooth efficiency, with the reader's loyalties shifting constantly, alongside the protagonist's. The twists come fast and furiously, each one questioning the facts that came before and you'll race to the satisfying end. Often reminded me of John Grisham at his earliest best, but with a feminine touch which is quite unique.
