Glittering society and literary Paris in the 20s with a spoilt rich English woman desperate to be accepted. The emptiness of her life is emphasised by an obsession for a pair of designer shoes and, indeed, the designer himself. A poignant, compulsive tale, much enjoyed.

Set in 1920s Paris the novel centres around Genevieve, an English aristocrat who is desperately unhappy with her cold, repressive family. To make matters worse she becomes pregnant at 16, is sequestered away by her parents and her illegitimate child is taken away at birth. She is crushed by the loss of her baby so when a wealthy American turns up for a business meeting with her father, Genevieve sees her chance to escape. She marries Robert, a staid, conservative man who idolises his new wife, and persuades him to move to Paris, that bohemian, glittering city of her dreams. She thrives amongst the writers and artists, and splashes his cash all over town on wonderful designer clothes, interiors and, of course, shoes - her great passion in life. She quickly befriends Lulu (loosely based on the real life Kiki of Montmartre) and the dynamic duo hit the nightclubs and salons with gusto, leaving her hapless husband behind. One night, Genevieve spots a pair of 'to die for' shoes on Countesse Violette de Fremont, her social arch-rival, and is determined to have a pair made for her. What she doesn't know is that the elusive, enigmatic man who makes 'the most expensive shoes in the world' will steal her heart, force her to confront herself and decide what matters most: love or money?
