Distant threads spin ever closer to create a compelling, emotional, and dramatic story. Set in 2012, with links to the 1970’s and 80’s, several women, for very different reasons find revisiting a tragedy from the past may alter the very fabric of their existence. Journalist Kate Waters from Fiona Barton’s debut novel The Widow returns, yet this establishes itself defiantly as a striking standalone tale. Fiona Barton doesn’t hide information, she sets it out in front of you, allowing you to suspect, giving you an insight some time before the main characters. The women in this story feel touchable, real, and as frustration gathers, empathy settles and understanding grows. The tension increases and I felt myself flinching as the jigsaw pieces gathered and started to slot into place. ‘The Child’ is such a readable tale, it isn’t about finding answers, instead the story encourages thought and provokes emotions before reaching a powerful conclusion. ~ Liz Robinson
