Shortlisted for the CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger 2016.
Maxim Jakubowski's June 2015 Book of the Month.
Winslow's The Power of the Dog which I once reviewed for The Guardian was a truly epic tale of the war against drugs that felt suffocating and sweaty and scary. This lengthy sequel is set barely a few months later as DEA Agent Art Keller believes he has finally left the dangerous world of Central and South American drug-running and murderous mayhem and treachery behind him for good.
However, his sworn enemy, crime kingpin Barrera escapes from his Mexican prison and is remodeling his evil trafficking empire and, with a price on his head, Keller has no alternative but to go undercover again. Torn from the headlines, this is a robust and exhausting doorstopper that no less than James Ellroy has described as 'the War and Peace of dope-war books' and is both intensely realistic and rigorously true to life with all the absolutely frightening implications this holds.
Genuinely breathless stuff that will grip and horrify you. A future classic. ~ Maxim Jakubowski
From the internationally bestselling author of the acclaimed novel The Power of the Dog comes The Cartel, a gripping true-to-life epic, ripped from the headlines, of power, corruption, revenge and justice spanning the past decade of the Mexican-American drug wars. It's 2004. DEA agent Art Keller has been fighting the war on drugs for thirty years in a blood feud against Adan Barrera, the head of El Federacion, the world's most powerful cartel, and the man who brutally murdered Keller's partner.
