Nora Roberts, the queen of characterful twisting thrillers, returns in fine form in Hidden Nature. Propelled by a whip-smart female cop with an instinct for sniffing out crimes others can’t see, a rollercoaster ride of tension plays out within a complex tapestry of small-town tension, strange vanishings and romance against a backdrop of the majestic Western Maryland mountains. 

“The day Sloan Cooper died began before dawn and ended shortly before midnight” — an arresting opening line that sets up the story in suitably compelling style. The context comes quick and compelling, too, when we learn that Cooper, a corporal in the Natural Resources Police was almost killed after being gunned down during an armed robbery.

Though she’s supposed to be taking time out to recover and get back to full health away from work, Cooper becomes drawn into the case of a young girl who was abducted from a store parking lot. After noticing similar incidents across other states, Cooper commits herself to figuring out a pattern in order to halt the escalating disappearances.

Slow-burn suspenseful, Hidden Nature will surely satisfy the author’s legion of devoted fans, and readers who like their thrillers to be layered with community context and family life.
