Fans of Robyn Young will know of her superb research for this is the concluding volume of an epic trilogy of Robert the Bruce, so the first half of the book concentrates on Robert running for his life in the face of the brutal English and uncontrollable Scottish clans (no spider I’m afraid!). The second half, when Robert gets his support and advances, is in quite a different gear. We now have great battle scenes, Robert having to manage his brother’s excesses, his own affair, his wife’s affair, chaos in the English court and the eventual battle of Bannockburn. All thrilling stuff. Pretty topical in the referendum year!

Kingdom Synopsis
Robert has achieved his great ambition to be crowned King of Scotland, but in so doing has provoked the wrath of Edward of England. Raising the feared dragon banner, the English king marches north, determined to recapture the kingdom. But the English are not Robert's only enemies. By murdering his great rival, John Comyn, he has split the kingdom apart and with his forces depleted and many of his own countrymen turned against him, Robert is forced to flee into the wilderness. He has a crown, but no country, the will to lead, but no real authority. The road before him is all but impossible, with treachery and heartbreak at every turn, but Robert must try slowly, surely, to regain the military advantage and the respect of a nation. Fighting from hidden strongholds and the Western Isles, with the support of a few brave men and the alluring noblewoman, Christiana, Robert drives towards the place where he will meet Edward II and decide the future of Scotland, in an epic confrontation near the village of Bannockburn.

About Robyn Young
Robyn Young was born in Oxford and grew up in the Midlands and Devon. She has a Masters in Creative Writing from the University of Sussex and lives and writes in Brighton full-time. Her first novel, Brethren, was the bestselling hardback debut novel of 2006, with the paperback also going straight into the top ten bestseller list. Two more bestsellers followed, Crusade and Requiem, completing the Brethren trilogy, which has now sold over a million copies and been translated into nineteen languages.
The inspiration for Robyn's new trilogy, which began with Insurrection and continues in Renegade, grew out of an earlier research trip to Scotland. Robyn explains: 'Day by day, out of the pages of history and the wild landscape, one figure came striding, larger, clearer than all the others - Robert the Bruce. He swept me off my feet and carried me into a story of bitter family feuds, two civil wars and the struggle for the crown. I realised there was no way this character could play a cameo role in another man's story. His tale was too powerful, too intricate and too good to be cut down and boxed to fit.'
