This high-octane debut fantasy novel about a female dragon racer took me straight back to reading The Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey as a teenager. Tailwind though, is very much its own animal, and I loved spending so much time with dragons in such a thrilling setting. Lena works as a keeper on the circuit yet is desperate to return to the dragon racing she loves, an accident allows her to sneak a ride on Gottyk, the dragon she raised, to enter the arena once more.
The competition feels like a more extreme Formula 1 as the teams travel from location to location, and it even has its own version of Monaco! The settings though, are as different as can be, and I definitely felt as though I was off-world and exploring richly imagined locations. The precision skill of the riders and dragons is a focus alongside the fierce determination of Lena to become the first female dragon racer.
Other themes of resilience, trust, and friendship run through this story. A potential romance enters the fray, yet doesn’t overwhelm, it feels an essential part of Lena’s tale and I welcomed its inclusion. Tailwind is a pure rush of a read and has been chosen as a Liz Pick of the Month because it has an energy that beguiles and exhilarates. I look forward to the next in The Dragon Rush series.
