A sequel to Beginning of Arrogance, Futility of Defence follows ReckNor’s paladin Krell as he continues to defend Watford against the sea devils while working to figure out what or who is behind the attacks.
This epic fantasy sequel follows on from the first book in the series and I would recommend starting with Beginning of Arrogance to understand how Krell came to be paladin to ReckNor, god of the seas and skies, as well as the backstories of his allies. A stubborn and determined heroic figure, Krell throws himself into fights against giants, demons, sea devils and more whilst in defence of Watfors and searching for Cor, the main lead for answers to the increase in sea devil attacks on the seaside town.
This is another action packed story. Paladins are known for being able to bring secrets to light, which means that wherever Krell goes, trouble seems to follow. But as tales of his heroism spread, more and more obstacles appeared in his way. I liked the interactions between ReckNor and his paladin, helping to explain Krell’s drive while also adding sarcastic conversations. I liked Krell’s naivety when growing closer to Dahlia, Sheana and Verbena, I found his relationship with them amusing. The proud dragon Fortis is another character that brings much needed light moments to the story.
Building to another dramatic climax this is another great epic fantasy with mythical creatures, mystery and bloodshed. I’m keen to continue to find out what happens next.

Paladins are nothing but trouble. When Krell, an uneducated nobody with a stubborn streak as wide as the sea, hears the call from ReckNor, the capricious god of the seas and skies, the attention of the rich and powerful turn their gaze toward him. Paladins are notorious for upsetting the balance of power, to the detriment of any who don't worship their deity.
When Krell stands against the might of the sea devils and emerges victorious, concern and interest turn to fear—fear of their secrets and plans being revealed and exposed, of the ruin that often follows in a paladin's wake. Now he stands in defense of a pitiful town at the edge of nowhere, even as the sea devil menace grows more dire for each day that passes.
For as deadly as the sea devils are to Krell, his past choices and the consequences of his actions may be deadlier still . . .
