Lovereading view...

Devotees of Susan Hill’s The Woman in Black will recognise Ed Marsh House and the deadly causeway. They will know of the sinister lady and the strange pull of the nursery. All this is nicely laid out for those who are not familiar with the original so despite being a sequel, this is also a deliciously creepy, old-fashioned ghost story in its own right. The setting has jumped to World War II and a bunch of school children and their two female teachers are evacuated to the house. On the way down in the train the younger teacher attracts the attention of an airman. Single love interest. But this is a ghost story, not a love story, and so the unexpected occurs with a nice twist. It is going to make a splendid film in 2014.

If you like Martyn Waites you might also like to read books by Chuck Palahniuk, Frank Lean and David Peace.

Reviews

The Woman in Black is back, and she is just as terrifying in this sequel as she was in Susan hill's creepy classic...Brilliantly clautrophobic and utterly chilling, Angel of Death is genuinely jump-out-of-your-seat frightening. - Daily Mail
