A Christmas Hope by Anne Perry

Lovereading view...

A lovely, old-fashioned murder mystery set in the mid 19th century. The sort of tale to read on a winter’s evening with your feet up in front of the fire. Claudine is a middle-aged, intelligent and unhappy lady. She and her unpleasant husband are part of the upper echelons of society. They go to the first party of the season. The guests are wonderful stereotypes; opinionated elders and arrogant youngsters. Walking on to the terrace for a breather, Claudine meets an unusual guest, a poet. Each is impressed by the other. A lot later Claudine is able to escape on to the terrace again where she finds the poet bending over a girl and three young ‘blades’ crying “murder”. The girl is taken to hospital and dies, the poet is arrested. Now Claudine comes into her own and what a splendid character, and self-appointed sleuth, she becomes, an unusual woman of the times. Despite the subject matter this is a warm, comfortable read.

Synopsis

A Christmas Hope by Anne Perry

London, 1868. As the Christmas season begins, Claudine Burroughs feels little joy in its endless social calls and extravagant events. Working at a clinic for desperate women has opened her eyes to a different world. Then her two worlds collide. A prostitute smuggled into a grandiose Christmas party is found brutally beaten. Poet Dai Tregarron stands accused. But Dai insists he was trying to protect her from the violence of three young men. Claudine believes him, but with society closing ranks against him, how can she prove his innocence without risking everything?
