Maxim Jakubowski's view...

A Maxim Jakubowski selected title.

Shortlisted for the CWA John Creasey Dagger 2013.

Nic Caruna is a hired killer and inhabits a bleak, dark city that runs like a seam beneath ordinary London. When he is hired to rescue an armdealer's daughter by all means, he falls into the mistake of giving in to his attraction to her damaged but beautiful mother, a woman with her own twisted agenda. Fast, uncompromising and violent and with shades of the classic GET CARTER, this dark and atmospheric debut from a precociously young British author packs a mean punch and heralds a major new talent.

CWA Judges' comment: “Fast, uncompromising and violent, Jameson’s debut evokes classic thrillers such as Get Carter. Dark and atmospheric with a bedrock of powerful and memorable characters. This is London noir with a subtle punch.”

The Lovereading view...

Taut, spare, and brilliantly plotted, Something You Are is the first in a series of menacing urban crime novels from a young female writer of exceptional talent.

Synopsis

Something You Are by Hanna Jameson

Debut noir from an extraordinary British talent. Is evil something you do? Or something you are? Nic Caruana is paid to kill people. Once, he was destined for a white-collar job in a middle-class area. But like many kids, he made a fatal mistake. Now, he inhabits the bleak, dark city that runs like a seam beneath London. His latest job is to track down the daughter of an arms dealer, using any weapon necessary to get to the truth. But Nic has fallen in love with his dangerous employer's wife. When the missing girl turns up dead, this grief-stricken mother starts playing twisted games with Nic...and this time he has nothing in his amoury to protect himself.

Reviews

'Jameson writes like an angel on speed. Ellroy and sometimes Rankin walk you to the dark side brilliantly. Something You Are is no less gripping, shocking and relentless'
Q magazine

'Jameson's taut and spare narrative complements a gripping plot with unmistakable undertones of the legends of this genre, Chandler, Ellroy, Rankin'
Red

'Jameson writes in turbo-charged shorthand, her fierce, sparse prose sparking off the page. She's able to evoke a whole scene with a single detail, and she's got a gift for getting under the skin of her characters ... a great new voice on the British crime fiction scene
The Book Bag

'accomplished and polished ... the first in a gritty and compelling series
