Sarah Broadhurst's view...

Another Macro and Cato adventure during the reign of the newly appointed Roman Emperor Claudius. Having upset some of the palace advisers as they helped Claudius and his son Nero to power, the two get themselves posted to Britain which they hope is far enough away to avoid their enemies in Rose. Cato is to take over the command of a post whose ruthless temporary commander Quertus regards as his personal domain under the leader of the British forces, Caracticus. So the troubles begin. Macro and Cato’s friendship forms the basis of this as they face their enemies both without and within. With good action and characterisation, this leaves you very much waiting for the next in the series.

The Good Book Guide logo The Good Book Guide Review. With the Roman grip on Britannia only tenuous, and Emperor Claudius depending on something akin to a miracle to remain in power, prefect Cato and centurion Macro are again enlisted to sort out the mess. In this twelfth ‘Roman Legion’ adventure the two heroes head for Wales with a group of hand-picked fighters to battle the dark forces of resistance. As ever, Scarrow’s sense of historical time and place is flawless, plunging the reader into a far-off age as he produces another gripping yarn.

The Blood Crows by Simon Scarrow

For nearly ten years, the Roman Empire has fought ceaselessly to strengthen its hold over Britannia. But opposition from native tribes led by the ruthless warrior Caratacus threatens to destroy everything. Prefect Cato and Centurion Macro are summoned by Governor Ostorius to Londinium. Tasked with leading a newly formed cavalry cohort into the heartland of Wales, they must destroy the growing resistance. But with Caratacus hatching increasingly ambitious plans and disorder threatening from within Macro and Cato's own ranks, this final test will push the soldiers to their limits. And if they do not emerge as victors, the Emperor Claudius's rule may be at stake, and the very foundations of the Roman Empire could be shattered irrevocably.
