Longlisted for the CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger 2011.

The twelfth novel from this master of thriller writing. In the Cobra, ex CIA man Paul Devereaux is given a licence to stop the drug cartels by whichever means necessary. Forsyth is a great researcher and doesn’t shy away from the harsh realities of the world of the drug barons. A great thriller, action packed and thought provoking.

If you like Frederick Forsyth you might also like to read books by Jack Higgins, Joseph Kanon and Gerald Seymour.

Synopsis

The Cobra by Frederick Forsyth

The Cocaine industry is worth billions of dollars a year to the drug cartels who spread their evil seed across Western society. Its usage causes incalculable misery, poverty and death. Slowly, gradually, inexorably it is spreading...it is a blight which must be stopped. One man, Paul Devereaux, intellectual, dedicated, utterly ruthless and ex-CIA special ops, is given what seems like an impossible task. At his disposal, anything he wants - men, resources, money. He will not stop until he has completed his mission. Up to now the drug trade has been used to world governments attempting to prevent them plying their trade. But up to now, those governments have played by the rules. That is about to change. The rules no longer apply...and a dirty war is about to get a whole lot dirtier...

Reviews

The Cobra creates a vividly cinematic picture of the worldwide cocaine trade. Forsyth has recharged his batteries, producing his most ambitious novel in years by reproducing the minutely organised detail of his most famous book. -- Barry Forshaw Daily Express As ever with Forsyth, there is an impressive command of armed weaponry as well as an utterly believable story that moves along at a breakneck pace...Extraordinarily impressive. In February 2012 Frederick Forsyth was announced as the winner of the prestigious CWA Diamond Dagger 2012. Chair of the CWA Peter James said, “Frederick Forsyth is a hugely deserving recipient and The Day of the Jackal remains one of the greatest thrillers of our times. He has set a new standard of research-based authenticity with his writing, which has had a major influence both on my work and on many of my contemporaries in the crime and thriller field. We are very thrilled that he has accepted this award.”

The CWA Diamond Dagger is a much-coveted lifetime achievement award and as the name suggests, it was sponsored by Cartier, who have done so since its inception in 1986 through to 2011. The winners’ careers have been marked by sustained excellence, and they have made a significant contribution to crime fiction published in the English language.
