Before it Rains Anymore

"This is a book that emphasises going out and experiencing life, the good, bad and amusing, before driving home a poignant final thought - that a life of travel, any life at all, may not be possible if we don’t do more to stop the damage to our planet, the climate and our health. "

Reflections on a life of travel in an ever changing world. Combining travel experiences with a historical context and a reflection of the rapidly changing world in which we live, Before it Rains Anymore considers the ever changing experiences of travel. With historical contexts such as the Apollo 11 Moon landing, the Assassination of President Kennedy, the 2006 Boxing Day tsunami grounding each narrative in time and place.

The historical context for the Vietnam visit was most striking, the explanation that, a generation after the war with America, “Christmas was a special holiday in Hanoi, particularly for the young who hadn’t experienced the horrors of the war.” The added context integrated alongside each memory highlights a key theme throughout the book, that the world is constantly changing, and when you travel you may only see that particular place once, no matter whether or not you go back.

Before it Rains Anymore highlights the perfect storm that generates those unique travel experiences while conveying the joy people find in travel and an eagerness to see it all before it changes. While the history included is oftentimes bleak, the memories of the places offer a balm, they bring each place to life outside of the facts and headlines, showing community, meeting new people and new experiences.

This is a book that emphasises going out and experiencing life, the good, bad and amusing, before driving home a poignant final thought - that a life of travel, any life at all, may not be possible if we don’t do more to stop the damage to our planet, the climate and our health. An insightful read for those who love to travel.

About Before it Rains Anymore

This collection of stories reflects memorable experiences the author had while travelling or working in many countries since the 1960s. He recalls unusual incidents in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, the Americas, New Zealand, Australia, and on a mostly overland journey from Darwin to London. The order reflects the way memories came to mind during the COVID pandemic when travel and social life were greatly restricted.
