LoveReading Says
We have now reached number 26 in the wonderfully titled series The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency which began in 1998. Bestselling and award-winning author Alexander McCall Smith obviously has a great fondness for the setting and people of Gaborone, Botswana. He creates a gentle pace and tone that feels oh-so welcome in our rushed and busy world.
Whenever I enter the stories containing Precious Ramotswe and friends I can feel myself relax and slow down, appreciating the vivid and colourful descriptions of the land and the warmth of the people. Friendship, patience, kindness and empathy, sharing of food and community are constant themes. Here, In the Time of Five Pumpkins, the agency take on a couple who each suspect the other of having an affair, and there is concern over the reasons behind a new friendship.
The famous intuition of Mma Ramotswe is slightly off centre for a time but is soon back on track. I love how the focus remains on the characters and location while the plot plays out. Botswana sings, from the traditions and community to the landscape and nature. Gentle humour keeps you company, several heart-in-mouth moments raise the tempo, and as always, the wisdom of the women sits centre stage.
Crafted with care and a real understanding of human nature, this book highlights just how special this series is. Gently amusing and uplifting, In the Time of Five Pumpkins is a much-needed balm, it soothes the soul and allows creativity and compassion space to breathe.

In the Time of Five Pumpkins Synopsis
Book 26 in the multi-million copy bestselling and perennially adored No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series
The rains are coming, but not just yet. When they do, there will be green shoots of growth throughout Botswana. Pumpkins will flourish - particularly those of Mma Potokwani, matron of a children's home and old friend of Precious Ramotswe. Mma Potokwani and Mma Ramotswe have many other things to talk about, including a new friendship that Mr J.L.B.
Matekoni has struck up with Mr Freddie Mogorosi, a prominent figure in the motor trade. Freddie Mogorosi has invited Mr J.L.B. Matekoni to go fishing with him on the local dam - which is home to some fairly nasty crocodiles. They do not catch anything, but something nearly catches them.
In the meantime, Mma Ramotswe looks into what seems to be a straightforward matter involving a husband who thinks his wife may be having affair. But there is a surprise in store: she, it transpires, suspects that he himself has a lover. This is obviously a case that will require tact - which of course is a quality Mma Ramotswe has in abundance. Along with kindness.
For Botswana is a kind country, and in this latest visit to The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency we are reassured that no matter how unhappy the world may be, there is always an oasis of courtesy and peace in that special place in southern Africa. To which you are now invited.

A Lovereading guide to the works of Alexander McCall Smith...
The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency was first published in 1998 and then, suddenly, it took off in America to the extent that no less than11 reprints were required in 2003.
Since then, so prolific has been his output, and so has his popularity soared, that there was a time when the sheer multitude of McCall Smith's books led to confusion as to which book fitted into each of the various series under which he writes. One has hardly been able to keep up with the sheer abundance of books published - we reckon at least thirty in less than a decade.
Now, thankfully, things have settled down and the legions of McCall Smiths avid fans can compartmentalise his new books into the four main series under which they sit - The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency Series, The Isabel Dalhousie Novels, The 44 Scotland Street Series and The Corduroy Mansions Series with a few more on top!
There are constant features across the whole panoply of McCall Smith's output. Wry and witty observations about the day-to-day lives of normal people. An innocence and delight in the human condition. And, always, a twinkle on the eye shared by writer and reader. He is a happy writer and that makes for happy readers.
