"A gentle and fascinating character-based coming-of-age story focusing on the unique family support a young woman has been given through her life by five parental figures."
Charming and a little bit different, this book shows that love and support can come in many different forms. It also focuses on resilience as Yuko has been brought up by five different parental figures since her mother died when she was young. Her parents are by no means perfect, they make mistakes and decisions based on their own preferences highlighting Yuko’s adaptability.
As Yuko falls in love, she seeks the blessing of her five parents and we step backwards and forwards in time through her life. Set in Japan, I really felt the difference in culture. Laurel Taylor the translator, enabled me to follow the story while being fully aware that I was witnessing the school, home, and relationship life in a different country.
Food is another theme and her final father figure uses food to support and bolster Yuko, a quiet humour also features within this section of her life. Five Blessings For a Wedding is a gentle ultimately feel-good read framing resilience, positivity and the many forms of love.
