LoveReading Expert Review of The Crossing Places

This is the author’s first venture in to crime writing, and this will be the first in a new series which looks set to be gripping and engaging stuff. Ruth Galloway makes a great lead figure as the forensic archaeologist who finds her expertise called upon to help solve crimes. Entertaining and full of suspense with the back drop of the wild Norfolk coast giving an extra chill to the bones.

The Crossing Places Synopsis

When she's not digging up bones or other ancient objects, Ruth Galloway lectures at the University of North Norfolk. She lives happily alone in a remote, wild place called Saltmarsh overlooking the North Sea under Norfolk's vast skies. For company she has her cats Flint and Sparky, and Radio 4.

When a child's bones are found in the marshes near an ancient site that Ruth worked on ten years earlier, Ruth is asked to date them. The bones turn out to be two thousand years old, and DCI Harry Nelson, who called on Ruth for help, is disappointed. He'd hoped they would be the bones of a child called Lucy who's been missing for ten years. He's been getting letters about her ever since - bizarre notes with references to ritual and sacrifice and quoting the Bible and Shakespeare.

Then a second girl goes missing and Nelson receives another letter similar to the ones about Lucy. Soon it becomes clear that Ruth is in grave danger from a killer who knows that her expert knowledge is being used to help the police with their enquiries.

The Crossing Places Reader Reviews

In addition to our Lovereading expert opinion some of our Lovereading Reader Review Panel members were also lucky enough to read and review this title. You can read their full reviews by clicking here.

  • Emily Wright - 'Elly Griffiths combines detection, archaeology and mythology to create an atmospheric thriller lightened by a touch of dry humour.'
  • Suzanne Marsh - 'very refreshing and enjoyable read. Indeed this is a clever novel with the mix of superstition and myth weaved into a modern crime novel. A must buy must read.'
  • Phylippa Smithson - 'The trouble with absorbing and fast-paced books is that you tend to read them at the same rapid pace – and then they are over.  That's my ONLY criticism of The Crossing Places - its brilliant.'
  • Angie Rhodes - 'Great book, with an ending I was not expecting.'
Jan Kirkcaldy - 'Though not surprised by the end result, it was a book I could not put down and as a result read it in one go. I thoroughly recommend it.'
  • Edel Waugh - 'Loved it! I will now go back and read the other books in this series as I really did enjoy it. If you liked Kathy Reichs or Patricia Cornwell then perhaps check this series out.'
  • Ray Orgill - 'This is really atmospheric writing at its best...Great stuff, great adventure, in fact a great read.'
  • Sarah Musk - 'An exciting book set in Norfolk with a clever, resourceful leading character. Dr Ruth Galloway is utterly believable as a sleuthing archaeologist in a child disappearance case.'
  • Jillian McFrederick - ', the dynamics of complicated relationships, the mystery of the discovered bones combined with the history of the land. Together they form a blend of ancient times and rituals with the present which  I enjoyed immensely.'
  • Julie Bertschin - 'Great page turner, gripping from start to finish.'
  • Julie Bickerdyke - 'The story is cleverly told and slowly released with relationships explored and exploited to great effect.'
  • Cyllene Griffiths - 'Altogether this is an amusing book, a light read...This is however, the first in a long series and as I have not read the others, perhaps they improve on a fairly promising start?'
