"A lovely warm hug of a novel set on the Cornish coast, with a beating heart centring on friendship, family, and romance."
If you’d like some feel-good vibes then step this way. I love Sarah Morgan’s novels, they are a pick-me-up in book form. Brave New Summer features two women as the main characters, Evie is struggling as the acting manager of a coastal hotel, and Abby is sent under cover by the owner to investigate.
The main theme is friendship and family, with a helping of romance on the side. Beautiful Cornwall features as the setting, with the hotel, a pub, and popular coastal village setting a buzzy vibe. I could easily imagine myself there, pottering around the streets, and soaking up the atmosphere in the hotel.
The differences between the two women and their family structure and upbringing are highlighted at the start and I enjoyed getting to know them. I loved the fact that friendship features so centrally, it creates such an engaging atmosphere and while romance is definitely on the cards, the ‘will they won’t they’ question really belongs to the two women and their friendship.
The back story simmers gently before it reaches boiling point, and I loved the close knit and supportive, yet sometimes stifling, structure of village life. Highlighting the positives of friendship, Brave New Summer is a satisfying and rewarding read set on the Cornish coast.
