"A very handy and rather lovely guide to accompany nature lovers and bee spotters while out in gardens, parks, and the countryside. "
This lovely guide to bees sings with information from author Dave Goulson and is beautifully illustrated by Ella Sienna. Like many, I adore bees, and as I read was pleased to learn that one of our best known, the buff-tailed bumblebee which I often see in my garden, was voted the UK’s favourite insect in 2015.
Not only does this book contain the information required to be able to spot a whole host of different bee’s, it also explains their history, diversity, and those who mimic them to avoid being eaten by predators. Within the pages there are helpful sections on gardening for bees, the best place to see bees, bee enemies, and the bee life cycle.
I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the different types of bees, from the appropriately named and exceeding ferocious bare-saddled blood bee who kills others offspring and replaces them with her own eggs, to one of the author’s favourites, the hairy-footed flower bee where the male uses the hair on his legs to stroke the face of the female during courtship!
I just had to pick this book as a Liz Pick of the month. I loved reading about the bumblebee hoverfly, whose larva help keep bumblebee nests clean, and pretends to sting if attacked, not so friendly towards the bee though, is the dark-edged bee-fly who not only fire their eggs into mining bees nests, their larvae consume the bee’s offspring!
There are so many tidbits and fascinating snippets of information to explore, the Bee Spotter’s Guide is a welcoming and informative guide.

A beautiful and unique guide to Britain's bees.Bees are much-loved and hugely important creatures. But most of us know next to nothing about them. There are actually over 200 species in this country.
