"A glory of voices throughout the year can be heard in this beautiful collection about gardens and gardeners sourced from letters, diaries, and articles."
This is such a lovely book, it’s full of tidbits, lore, personal musings, and the knowledge, oh the knowledge (!) of the people who love gardens, gardening, and all that comes with that particular joy, including the occasional headache. Set out over a calendar year, Claire Masset has collated an inspiring collection of voices spread through history.
She explains in her foreword, that within the pages the essence of a gardening year is captured through the seasons. You can tell how much she has enjoyed the research, the meeting of those who love their slice of soil. A wide variety of people, gardens, understanding, beliefs and opinions have been included.
While I thoroughly enjoyed the famous musings of Vita Sackville-West and Octavia Hill, I think some of my favourites were the anonymous letters and advice sent into various magazines. Each voice joins to form a vivid and vibrant set of stepping stones through the wonders of nature and those who lend a helping hand.
From allotments to historic parklands, from particular plants to seeds and weeding, the snippets of advice, the sighs of frustration and yells of success, they all join to form the most interesting of books. You can either dive straight in to particular days that have significance, or follow from the beginning through dark January days, or just open the pages at random.
This would make a thoughtful gift and strike a chord with any garden lovers out there whether they own a window box or acres. A joyous, creative, beautiful book, Garden Voices is a joining of hands in the celebration of the garden.

A fascinating celebration of our love for all things horticultural, with a selection of garden-related entries from diaries, letters and articles for every day of the year.
