They may say revenge is a dish best served cold, it also helps when accompanied by a chilling blood-soaked rage in this fabulously gothic treat! To take Estella from Great Expectations and set her up as the main character in her own set of novels is a stroke of genius from author Barbara Havelocke. Her story began with Estella’s Revenge and although I stepped with ease straight into Estella’s Fury I would recommend starting at the beginning to fully enjoy the complexities of this character.
This avenging dark gothic anti-heroine makes for a seriously compelling lead, cross her at your peril. In this novel she visits a friend, and stumbles on a deadly network of organised criminals. Imagine Codename Villanelle and Sweetpea mixed with Oliver Twist and you will be on the right track. This is clever writing, the intricacies of Great Expectations hold true and mix beautifully together with social history, a cracking plot, and a warped sense of right and wrong.
The sense of place is immense and creates an all encompassing atmospheric chill. I adored how the back story plays out, how the web of Estella’s life has led to this point, and each strand slots into place until you feel understanding for the person she has become. Rage and revenge make for a bitter song, yet love and hope also play a part.
Richly compelling, Estella’s Fury is a powerful and provocative story of vengeance set within the societal horrors of Victorian Britain.
