"Join a meticulously planned art-world heist and enter dangerous waters in this beautifully written and eloquently powerful thriller."
There is a real strength to this novel, it is both a moving and powerful tribute to a lost way of life as much as it is a stinging, slicing thriller. In 1990’s Boston, two men are joined forever as one stumbles through the edge of an art museum robbery masterminded by the other. While very much a work of fiction, this novel is seeped in the history of the Long Island fishermen and an unsolved art museum robbery. Author Simon Gaul writes with an eloquent pen, the words captured my attention, sank into my thoughts, and evoked my emotions. I was able to visualise, to see and feel these two worlds as they collided. Two families are set into play, with the history of each shaping the main characters. The two men almost sit within their own very personal story, the connection taking moments but shaping their lives. The other characters are vitally important and beautifully drawn, understanding of their placement comes, even if they are on the page for a moment. The seascape became a part of me, the danger, the love, how it enters the soul, while the descriptions of grief moved me with their stark knowing simplicity. The writing kept me entirely engaged, I didn't think ahead or wonder what was to come, I remained in each and every moment and that is why this book joins our LoveReading Star Books and also sits as a Liz Pick of the Month. Haunting yet present, action-packed and energised yet centred and quiet, No Man’s Land is a beautiful thrilling tale I can highly recommend.
