After witnessing a terrible tragedy in her childhood, June Ross grew up to trust no one but herself and refusing to let anyone else in, in case she loses them. But then she is assigned a bodyguard as part of her new job. Aedan King is an experienced bodyguard now running his own personal security business, with his own baggage and a recent close scrape with love. Will Aedan be able to do his job and protect June, and will it lead to both their walls finally crumbling?

Taming a King is a standalone sequel from Rita A. Gordon. Readers may have met Aedan in Gordon’s previous book, 30 Days in Belfast, and will therefore be familiar with Rose Ross and the some events alluded to at the start of the book, but this can otherwise be read quite easily as a standalone.

I liked the perspective shifts, giving us time with June and with Aedan, as they figure out each other and as their relationship deepens, the characters are very focused on each other and when the Rubicon is crossed in their relationship they can’t keep their hands of each other, a bonus for spicy romance readers.

The continuation of the dynamic between June and London provides a reliable source of possessiveness and jealousy-filled passion, but felt a bit weird to me. I liked the Whitney Houston / The Bodyguard reference in this bodyguard romance with the Queen of the Night codename, it was a fun nod that I hope was intentional while also hinting at June and Aedan’s compatibility through their names.

In all, readers who enjoyed 30 Days in Belfast can enjoy this and be satisfied by the conclusion of Aedan’s story and Taming a King is an eminently readable bodyguard romance for fans of the trope.
