"Although Castleby is becoming the Midsummer of the coast, this is another gripping instalment of a gritty thriller series with tonnes of character focus that I definitely recommend."
Another gritty, storyline set on the shores of Castleby. I’m sure it’s probably a strange thing to say considering each book contains a decent serving of darkness but I really enjoy my trips to Castleby. After reading one book I always keep my eye out for when the next one is due and it’s become a series that I intend to follow for a while yet.
In ‘Sea Haven’ as this quaint seaside community prepares for Christmas it welcomes new characters Tabitha and Sebastian, father and daughter leaving looking for a space to heal after a devastating car crash leads to the loss of their wife / mother and star actress Cassie Warner. As the crash happened not far from Castleby, DI Steve Miller is investigating and the evidence shows it might not have been an accident.
Castleby also welcomes back Fox’s ex-wife Carla, looking for space to heal and make a difficult decision following a sexual assault. We also find the local organised crime family threatened by a turf war, as another group starts to scout out their patch. We’re four books into the Castleby series now, and the town feels familiar, with plenty of familiar faces to catch up with.
Saying this, one of the clever details of this series is that J.M Simpson focuses on new characters each time for the main plotline. This means that, although I recommend you heading back to ‘Sea State’ to enjoy this series from the beginning, it’s not necessary to read these stories in order.
There’s enough context provided for any characters we may have met before to serve as an introduction to those new to the series, and a refresher for everyone else. Fox is my favourite character and although I loved that he is still a feature in these books, my heart broke for him following his story in ‘Sea Haven’ and I am eager for him to catch a break and experience a little bit more happiness at some point in the future.
Back to the main plotline, Sebastian and Tabatha seem to integrate into the Castleby community really well. It's good to see the stories of younger female characters portrayed, and I’ll be curious to see how they continue to integrate in future books. Although Castleby is becoming the Midsummer of the coast, this is another gripping instalment of a gritty thriller series with tonnes of character focus that I definitely recommend.
