The Palisades

"This is a fantastic novel, beautifully written. Dark in places, amusing in others, part family drama, part murder-mystery, the characters are perfectly interwoven."

Ruth is a caregiver in California. Having been fired from working in care homes due to the patients in her care dying suspiciously, she becomes a home help to the rich and elderly. She becomes the private carer for Esther Fiske, the daughter of the wealthy, old Hollywood Fiske family. Ruth meets Dorothy, Esther's sister-in-law and becomes her private maid. Dorothy is recently widowed, living alone in her mansion in the Palisades. Dorothy had wanted to be part of the old Hollywood set when she moved to California. She dreamed of being an actress, but instead married into money. She has an obsession with movie stars, fine jewellery and murder mysteries. Ruth has an obsession with Dorothy, fine jewellery and finding out the truth about her parents. This is a fantastic novel, beautifully written. Dark in places, amusing in others, part family drama, part murder-mystery, the characters are perfectly interwoven. I enjoyed the references to Judy Garland and Angela Lansbury. The descriptions of the jewellery were lovely. It reminded me in part of ‘The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo’ with the tales of Hollywood in its heyday. A really enjoyable read and highly recommended.
