LoveReading Says

Available in Kindle and Paperback from Amazon.

A mind-bending thriller that sees a retired spy forced to re-enter a world of corruption and conspiracy to pay a debt before his family do.

A tapestry of different plotlines weave together to form Phantom Orchid by Andrew Graham. Rob McGentry’s past in international espionage comes back to bite when his daughter Sara treats and cures the wrong person. What ensues is a kidnapping and rescue that forms just a small part of a larger narrative of nationalism and extreme conservatism that sets America on a destructive path.

All while reading you’re never quite sure who is pulling the strings. Power in all its spectre-like forms is at play, which means you’re not sure who to trust, or what’s going to happen at any given moment. At its core is a family split apart by secrets and people outside of their reach.

I think that this book was far reaching in scope. I liked how the big issues of nationalism and politics played out on a small town scale with Rob’s fight to save his ranch. The impact of a constitutional reset and the apparent validation of bigoted beliefs played out on a personal scale had a relatable and powerful impact.

The almost futile nature of the McGentry’s fight adds to the tension, you want them to find a way to save each other and the lives they worked for, then there’s a sucker punch in the following pages as something else appears out of the woodwork to put them in danger. This is a storyline where I truly could never predict what was going to happen next, and one that leaves you with the possibility of more to come.

Phantom Orchid kept me guessing as I rooted for Rob and Sara but was left wondering if it might not be a warning of where the world is headed. I hope not.

Compelling characters caught up in a world that felt like a warning of where we might be headed.

Rob McGentry's past life comes back to haunt his family, and he has to return to the world he thought he'd left behind to save his daughter Sara. As Rob's family discovers the reality of his past life, their relationships begin to unravel against a backdrop of a Country driven apart by tribal politics and IA enhanced social media. Rob and Sara each slowly realize their tormentor is behind not only their troubles but also those of the Country.

As Rob struggles to save his ranch and the life he had long dreamed of he finds himself battling forces that go far beyond his hometown enemies, while Sara battles her own demons in the aftermath of her abduction.... Read Full Review
