An eerie and powerful short story on a difficult and important topic with stunning illustration. The first thing that draws your attention to ‘PAIR’ by Joshua Luke Ameliorate are the stunning illustrations, realistically detailed with a fantasy edge and a cool toned colour palette that sets off the eerie and dark nature of the story really well. In PAIR we follow Artemis, struggling to survive alongside the perfect mother to the outside world, but hides vindictive, torturing and abusive behaviour. This is a short and poignant story that emphasises how trapped and alone a child can be while being abused and neglected by their caregiver. The non-fiction introduction provides the stark reality of how common this situation is. ‘PAIR’ is a dark, eerie and thought-provoking narrative that draws the reader in and draws attention to an important topic. My heart went out to Artemis as I read and I hoped that she would be able to escape the abusive environment by the end of the story.
