Cameron Cooley is a hack for an Edinburgh paper. Although no angel himself he finds himself involved in a very seedy world where murder and conspiracy are rife. Another novel where Banks mixes the grotesque with his dark humour. He is not for the faint hearted but he can sure tell a good story.

If you like Iain Banks you might also like to read books by Howard Jacobson, Sam Taylor and James Smythe.

Synopsis

Complicity by Iain Banks

COMPLICITY n. 1. the fact of being an accomplice, esp. in a criminal act A few spliffs, a spot of mild S&M, phone through the copy for tomorrow's front page, catch up with the latest from your mystery source - could be big, could be very big - in fact, just a regular day at the office for free-wheeling, substance-abusing Cameron Colley, a fully paid-up Gonzo hack on an Edinburgh newspaper. The source is pretty thin, but Cameron senses a scoop and checks out a series of bizarre deaths from a few years ago - only to find that the police are checking out a series of bizarre deaths that are happening right now. And Cameron just might know more about it than he'd care to admit ...Involvement; connection; liability - Complicity is a stunting exploration of the morality of greed, corruption and violence, venturing fearlessly into the darker recesses of human purpose.

Reviews

Literate, passionate, and well-paced, Complicity succeeds as both an absorbing entertainment and a chilling examination of accountability in a morally bankrupt world * San Francisco Chronicle * From the brilliant opening...that lands the reader smack in the middle of the first of a series of cold-blooded murders to the final confrontation on a weather-beaten wild island...Complicity is irresistibly compelling * New York Times Book Review * The most imaginative novelist of his generation * The Times *
