We return to Castleby as another new face joins the community and new and old threats lurk in the shadows. ‘Sea Shaken’ by J.M. Simpson is the third book in this series, following ‘Sea State’ and ‘Sea Change’, and I was thrilled to revisit Castleby, to reunite with old characters, meet new ones and examine the mystery of a number of suspicious deaths in the older population.

Following the same style as previous books, ‘Sea Shaken’ follows a number of different storylines, recapping and updating you with Foxy, Sophie, Jesse, and Jimmy. When focusing on characters in the previous books, enough of an explanation is provided about past incidents without bogging you down with detail, perhaps enticing those who haven’t read the earlier books to go back and do so.

In 'Sea Shaken' we meet, Dr Kate Cooper, as she moves back to Castleby looking for a fresh start and to help manage her father's GP surgery. While settling in to her new role she is asked to look into a series of deaths in the care home community. I really enjoy how the author balances a story about the small seaside town, its people and their connections, with the snippets of mystery, this time a sinister voice proclaiming their actions are God’s work lets you know you're hearing from the murderer, and it pulls you back into the shadows and the puzzle within the plot.

So much happens within J.M. Simpson’s stories that for every story thread I list, I remember at least 2 more. There's new relationships, a soldier returned broken from war, women overcoming abusive partners, a local festival full of spectacle that I wanted to hop into the pages and be a part of and much more.

Suffice it to say that I think this series has a bit of something for everyone and I look forward to future visits to Castleby.
