Detective Hiroshi returns with another fast paced investigation. ‘Azabu Getaway’ by Michael Pronko is book 5 in the Detective Hiroshi series. In this investigation the forensic accountant is taken away from his desk and into the field to investigate the death of the CEO of Nine Dragons, a wealth management company. The case becomes more complicated with a second murder and the abduction of two young girls, daughters to one of Nine Dragon’s highly successful wealth managers. Firstly I loved the cover of this book, its limited colour palette is striking and its subtle illustration of the plot is well done. I have read one of the previous books in the series and ‘Azabu Getaway’ delivered the same style of fast-paced investigation, with Hiroshi and his team coming to investigate the darker underbelly of Japan’s rich and powerful. This being the 5th Detective Hiroshi book, it is assumed that the reader is already familiar with Hiroshi and his colleagues so, if you want to get to grips with the Detectives’ entire character arcs I would suggest starting the series at the beginning. However, you are more than able to follow the mystery at the forefront of the plot regardless of whether you’ve read past books and I think that the author’s choice to switch narrative perspective between Hiroshi and Patrick, the Nine Dragons wealth manager, really helps with this. Expertly integrating family ties and Japanese culture, ‘Azabu Getaway’ is a complex case that kept me guessing throughout. Another great addition to the series and a great read for police procedural fans.
