The first book in a historical science fiction series ‘OldEarth Aram Encounter’ by A. K. Frailey sees three clans face challenges and prosperity in the shadow of a strange world waiting in the wings to play their part. When we first meet the three different clans, each is facing their own challenges, one is threatened by a dangerous feline predator, one ruled by a madman determined to conquer all others including a arable clan that live peacefully by the water. The fates of these three clans are joined, an alliance is formed and together the three must help each other endure and survive natural disaster, wild animals and outside forces and ruthless giants. I enjoyed this narrative, of hunter gatherers, superstition, faith and a simple world without technology where people relied on each other. I did find myself throughout wondering where the science fiction element would come in, and whether it was really needed. I didn’t really connect with the narrative of the otherworldly beings. We briefly meet Teal in the beginning, a shapeshifting guardian whose role it is to ensure that no planet is being exploited by galactic beings with more advanced technology. And throughout the book we meet more of his colleagues who each have their own agendas. I found this aspect of the story less engaging, perhaps if there had been more of an introduction to Teal at the start I would have built more of a connection to the character and the narrative. The narrative is imaginative, the characters each have their own flaws and inner challenges to provide dimension. There’s plenty of scope in the rest of the series for the reader to gain more insight into these clans and their otherworldly watchers.
