Sarah Broadhurst's view...

A very human drama of spying, loyalty and the interplay of relationships, a cut above the norm. Involving suspected fraud at an American naval base, exposing a spy ring and racing towards a dramatic showdown, this is complex, pacy and very absorbing. Highly recommended.

Comparison: Lee Child, David Baldacci, Joseph Finder.

Synopsis

The Payback by Mike Lawson

Sent to investigate what he thinks is a case of fraud at a US naval base, all round good-guy and Washington troubleshooter Joe DeMarco soon realises that he's stumbled on something even more lethal.

Accompanied by Emma, an ex Defence Intelligence Agent, DeMarco comes up against a ruthless and vengeful woman, whose hatred of his colleague stems back to when both women were submerged in the cold war. Their encounter destroyed the woman's career and turned her into a ruthless operative intent on destroying Emma.

DeMarco has never been near a spy in his life, and now he is faced with one of the deadliest in the business of espionage, and what's more he's not convinced this is someone he can fight. But this time, it's not just his own life at stake.

Reviews

Praise for `The Inside Ring'`This assured first novel shows Michael Lawson to be a talented storyteller, and DeMarco makes a likeable hero as he follows an intricate trail through some typically murky American politics.
Daily Telegraph

`Mike Lawson shows every understanding of the skills required of a thriller writer to keep a reader fully engaged and utterly thrilled.
Guardian

`Mike Lawson writes a mean thriller and has a sense of humour that hurts. I love this one.
Independent on Sunday

`Smart, original, crafted with true insider knowledge, brimming with vivid characters and with a forward drive that just won't quit...I couldn't put it down.
