Lovereading view...

Sixteen-year-old step sisters Mary and Jane are bored. Longing for romance they dream of attracting the attention of a rich and handsome man who will take them away to somewhere foreign and interesting. When the poet Shelley walks into their father’s shop, Mary immediately falls head over heels in love. He is everything she has imagined and more. But Mary and Shelley’s flight to Europe does not bring the happiness she has hoped for. Tragedy and romantic are brilliantly combined in this powerful story based on the life of Mary Shelley.

Synopsis

Angelmonster by Veronica Bennett

Mary and her sister Jane have always longed for a handsome young poet to whisk them away from their mundane life. Then, in the spring of 1814, Percy Shelley walks into their father's shop, like an angel of deliverance.

Reviews

Those in search of a good story need look no further. * The Guardian * A haunting story, beautifully written and rich in historical detail. * The Bookseller * Captures all the bliss and folly of Mary's disastrous surrender to love, and the sorrowful steps by which she became Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein and the young widow of a great Romantic poet... Bennett's take on this legendary night [at Byron's villa] is as silky and confident as the rest of her novel... Succeeds in conveying the tumbling emotions of [Mary's] forced maturity and her intense, ill-omened love. * New York Times *

It's the first site that I visit when deciding on the next set of books to buy. A particular treat is being able to download an extract.

A well laid out site, I love the fact that is separates paranormal fiction from fantasy and horror, which other sites don't.
