LoveReading View on Faithless

An assured, chilling, and intense piece of crime fiction set in Oslo. Detectives Frolich and Gunnarstranda investigate the murder of a woman who has been found scalded and wrapped in plastic, Gunnarstranda gets help from an unexpected source, while things get very personal for Frolich. This is an established policing team, however my first outing, and while it took me a little while to get to know them, ‘Faithless’ can easily be read without prior knowledge of the series. Kgell Ola Dahl establishes a strong, sparse structure, yet Norway flowed from page and into my mind. A sinister edge hovers over the characters, ready to slice and cut, while the complexity of the investigation sent my mind into overdrive. Information is slowly revealed, creating tension, pushing anticipation forwards. The plot runs a jagged course, twisting through story, all the while building to a dramatic conclusion. If you love Nordic Noir, then look no further, ‘Faithless’ is a fiercely powerful and convincing read. ~ Liz Robinson

Faithless Synopsis

Oslo detectives Gunnarstranda and Frolich are back ... and this time, it's personal... When the body of a woman turns up in a dumpster, scalded and wrapped in plastic, Inspector Frank Frolich is shocked to discover that he knows her ... and their recent meetings may hold the clue to her murder. As he begins to look deeper into the tragic events surrounding her death, Frolich's colleague Gunnarstranda finds another body, and things take a more sinister turn. With a cold case involving the murder of a young girl in northern Norway casting a shadow, and an unsettling number of coincidences clouding the plot, Frolich is forced to look into his own past to find the answers - and the killer - before he strikes again. Dark, brooding and utterly chilling, Faithless is a breath-taking and atmospheric page-turner that marks the return of an internationally renowned and award-winning series, from one of the fathers of Nordic Noir.

Closing date: 09/11/2018

To celebrate the paperback release of the "simply superb" Come and Find Me, we have the opportunity to win a copy of the book with bookplates SIGNED by author Sarah Hilary. The competition will close on Friday 9 November with winners being notified by Friday 16 November.  "Simply superb, Come and Find Me is one hell of a clever, twisting, powerful story. This series is one of my favourites and DI Marnie Rome returns here in splendid style ... Sarah Hilary has the ability to take you into the words, to actually feel, to experience, and she sent my thoughts worming and writhing. At one point I found myself so exasperated and frustrated with one of the characters, it came as a shock when I came up for air and realised where I was. The ending buffeted me, surprised me, emotionally affected me, and a certain someone is still creeping around inside my mind. I already know that Come and Find Me will be one of my favourite reads of the year, and I think this is Sarah Hilary’s best yet, I simply can’t recommend this series highly enough." - Liz Robinson, Editorial Expert To have a chance of winning this fantastic prize, click the button below. Faithless Press Reviews

Praise for Kjell Ola Dahl:

‘As in previous books by Dahl, we are presented (in a subtly nuanced translation by Don Bartlett) with a dexterous synthesis of classic police procedural and social novel. The details of life in modern Norway are more than added value. Such texture is as pleasurable as the whodunnit elements, particularly as the detectives' caustic observations on the absurdities and irritations of Norwegian society are so sardonically entertaining. If there is a discernible influence on Dahl, it's the matchless Swedish detective novels of Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö. The Last Fix has all the skilfully orchestrated tension of that duo's Martin Beck series’ Barry Forshaw, Independent

‘I have read many clever and thrilling crime novels through my life, but often they have nothing to do with real life. If I don't believe in them, they don't impress me. But when Kjell Ola Dahl tells his stories, I believe every single word’ Karin Fossum
