Not that reviews have much of an influence on the bestseller lists, but the critics went to war with Hilton's debut Maestra. Her follow-up in the ruthless and often cynical adventures of art expert, conniver, killer and beauty Judith Rashleigh in Domina is a hoot and I must confess the series is becoming something of a guilty pleasure. True the plots are contrived but you can't turn the page fast enough and the writing is full of hidden gems, irony and witty if self-involved observations and Hilton's knowledge and interest in art, forgeries, the world of the super rich and the label-focused clothes and jewellery jumps out of the page and screams of authenticity. As ever Judith, now installed in Venice as a gallery owner with a new name until her past catches up with her, wickedly enjoys her sex and conniving and there are lashes of lovers and victims and in your face explicitness to keep the plot running along in overdrive. But, first and foremost, the books are fun, sexy to the max and remind me of Highsmith's Tom Ripley if he were a woman who truly relishes her evil ways. Don't read the reviews! ~ Maxim Jakubowski
