Maxim Jakubowski March 2016 Highly Recommended.
The world and mind of teenage girls proves again to be a minefield of jealousy, intrigue, cunning and outright evil in this twisty thriller seemingly intended for young adults but which older readers will find equally fascinating. Like a US cheerleaders and assorted school cliques kind of movie moved to suburban England, crossed with the unreliable domestic narrators of GONE GIRL, Pinborough's fascinating new novel is a relentless plunge into unsavoury minds and conspiracies. A young girl survives death in a frozen river but cannot remember what actually happened. Her once unceremoniously dumped frumpy friend seeks not only to solve the conundrum but also reassert herself as part of the group of vain beauties she has always aspired to be a part of and unveils webs of lies and deceit in the painstaking, calculating process. Only someone who has taught teenagers, as Pinborough once did, would dare to unpeel genteel facades with such forensic cruelty. Gripping to the chilling end.
I was dead for 13 minutes. I don't remember how I ended up in the icy water but I do know this - it wasn't an accident and I wasn't suicidal. They say you should keep your friends close and your enemies closer, but when you're a teenage girl, it's hard to tell them apart. My friends love me, I'm sure of it. But that doesn't mean they didn't try to kill me. Does it? 13 MINUTES by Sarah Pinborough is a gripping psychological thriller about people, fears, manuiplation and the power of the truth. A stunning read, it questions our relationships - and what we really know about the people closest to us ...
